Difference Between Which and In Which In English Grammar

These two words which and in which have different usages in the English grammar.

Let us consider the following example “I saw the same cat which I saw in the mirror a moment ago” In this sentence the word which is used as a relative pronoun as it had identified the cat that was seen a few moment ago.

The word in which is used as a combination of the two words ‘in’ and ‘which”. Let us consider the following sentence. “In the house there is a red BMW where my cell phone lies”. This sentence can be re-written as “In the house there a red BMW in which my cell phone lies”. Let us have yet another example. The sentence “There was a time people used to be hanged as a punishment.” This sentence can be rewritten as “There was a time in which people used to be hanged as a punishment.” The easiest way to provide a relative clause to nouns that denote a place or a point of is to use in which.

The word which is used to indicate animals, objects, plants but not human beings. Let us have some examples

1. Which of these holiday destinations would you prefer?

2. Which is the best video game in the world?

In both the sentences we can see the word which is either denoting a holiday destination or a video game, none of which are human beings. So we can safely say that which are not used in case of human beings.
