Difference Between African And Indian Elephants
Elephants particularly African and Indians have many differentiating traits, besides they can be distinguished just by looking at them. The first sign that you can see is that African elephants have larger ears that cover the neck and elephas maximas indicus have small ears that do not reach the back.
African elephants are heavier and larger than those belonging to India. When the normal African elephant’s weight is about 4000-7000 pounds, the weight of the elephant belonging to India is only about 3000-6000 kg. If you look at the height, the African elephants are about four meters tall on the shoulders, and Indian elephants are only half an inch below. The part where highest point is carried by an African elephant is on the shoulder whereas Indian elephant’s on the back side.
It is also possible to separate the two elephants by looking at their skin. Savanna elephants have wrinkled skin more than their Indian counterpart.
The two elephants are also different in relation to the back, stomach and head. The African elephant has a concave-shaped back while the Indian elephant has a convex or straight-shaped back. Stomach of African elephant slopes down towards the back foot. The Indian elephant has hanging belly in the middle.
Seeing from the perspective of teeth the African elephant has molars of diamond shaped while a compressed tooth is the characteristic trait of an elephas maximus. The masculine and female African elephants possess tusks, the male have longer ones and larger. Only a male Indian elephants has tusks, females either have no tusks or just the rudimentary ones. The Indian elephant has a long, tapered lower lip while the African elephant has a short and rounded lower lip. African elephants have more rings in the trunk as compared to the Indian elephant which have fewer rings. Trunk of the African elephant is relatively less hard than the Indian elephant.
