Officials prepare and politicians decide. Sounds easy, but what’s the difference?
The municipal politicians are elected and chosen by you as residents in the general elections after a set period of time. The politicians are democratically elected and thus should reflect residents’ wishes for how the municipality should be governed and led. A democracy can not function without elected representatives.
To prepare and implement policy decisions we need public servants. It is not just about general skilled administrators but also for specialized professions as lawyers, economists, teachers, doctors, nurses, nursing assistants and many other professions. These are officers and are not elected by the people but are employed by Government. Officials’ job is to help policy makers to prepare and execute their various decisions.
In short, the politicians take decisions on what should be done in the municipality. Officials will then decide what you practically have to do to achieve the goals.
