What is the difference between Diclofenac Sodium and Diclofenac Postassium?

The Diclofenac drug is one that is widely prescribed all over the world as a pain reliever. Two forms of it are Diclofenac Sodium and Diclofenac Potassium. It is considered to be a non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It has been used to relieve the pain of arthritis, menstrual cramps and to reduce inflammation.

Diclofenac is fast acting and is safer to take than ibuprofen. It also remains active in the body for a longer period of time. The difference between Diclofenac Sodium and Diclofenac Postassium is that the potassium salt is more soluble in water than sodium salt is.

Diclofenac potassium is absorbed into the body very quickly. It starts to relieve the pain very quickly. Diclofenac Sodium and Diclofenac Potassium have different natures and even though the dosage you take may be the same, they cannot be treated as being the same kind of drugs. Diclofenac Potassium has an immediate release and Diclofenac Sodium has a delayed release. Therefore for acute and severe pain, the best drug to take is Diclofenac Potassium.

Sometimes doctors simply write Diclofenac on the prescription without specifying which type of the drug they mean. In the US, UK, Brazil and India, patients can obtain both forms of Diclofenac. In China only the sodium variety is available and in other countries of the world there is only potassium. It is also available in cream, gel, ointment and tablet form. It is also possible to receive an injection of Diclofenac when the pain is so severe that the patient needs immediate medication.
