Difference Between Oestrogen and Progesterone

Oestrogen and Progesterone are two different steroid compounds that are known by their different behavior. Oestrogen works as like female sex hormone. In fact it can be easily said that Oestrogen functions as the main sex hormone in women. On the other hand Progesterone is produced both in males and females. This is the main difference between Ostrogen and Progesterone.

It is interesting to note that Progesterone belongs to the category of hormone C-21 which is important in the formation of embryo and the pregnancy. On the other hand Oestrogen finds its use in oral contraceptives. The purpose of taking of oral contraceptives is replacement of oestrogen in females who have had menopause.

In fact Progesterone is synthesized from Dioscorea that is from the yam family while Oestrogen helps activating the receptors attached to G-proteins.

It is important to note that Oestrogen helps in the development of female secondary sexual characteristics and helps in the regulations of menstrual cycle. It is so known be present in the women in their reproductive phase of life. Progesterone is produced in ovaries and during the pregnancy it is produced in placenta.

Here, you must know that the milk products are the supplementary source of progesterone owing to the fact that cows are milked while they are pregnant. This is the time when the progesterone level in the milk is naturally quite high. Hence it becomes supplementary source of progesterone.

It is a fact that progesterone plays vital role in preparing the uterus for conceiving. If pregnancy does not happen then progesterone levels decrease. One main use of Oestrogen is in curing osteoporosis.
